I was about to print a 20-page document for editing. I had to stop and think when deciding whether to print single-sided or two-sided. Which would be a smarter option? If I printed single-sided, I would have used 20 sheets, but would also have 20 sheets of scratch paper to use later. If I printed two-sided, I would have used only 10 sheets but wouldn’t be able to use them for scratch paper later.
Seems like a trivial decision right? But what do we do when we’re faced with decisions like these, in which a superior option isn’t quite so obvious? Sometimes you just have to close your eyes and pick one, based on your current desired benefits, the information at hand, and consequences predictable at that moment in time. We don’t possess the ability to see with certainty how our choices will turn out. There’s too much in flux. We just have to make a choice and deal with the consequences. And if they turn out to be adverse, don’t drown in regret or beat yourself up for not being psychic. Learn from it.
กำลังจะพิมพ์เอกสารมาตรวจ ต้องหยุดคิดว่าจะพิมพ์กระดาษด้านเดียวหรือสองด้านดี แบบไหนถึงจะดีและฉลาดที่สุด พิมพ์กระดาษด้านเดียว ก็จะใช้กระดาษทั้งหมด 20 แผ่น แต่มีอีก 20 หน้าไว้ใช้เขียนอะไรเล่นได้อีก ถ้าพิมพ์สองด้านของกระดาษจะใช้แค่ 10 แผ่น แต่เสร็จแล้วต้องทิ้งเลย เอามาเขียนอะไรเล่นต่อไม่ได้
เหมือนกับคิดเรื่องไร้สาระใช่ไหม แต่เราจะทำอย่างไร ถ้าเราถูกบังคับให้ต้องตัดสินใจ โดยที่ตัวเลือกไม่ได้ดูเด่นชัด
บางทีก็แค่หลับตาเลือกเอา ตามความต้องการของเราในเวลานั้น และข้อมูลที่มีตอนนั้น และผลประโยชน์ที่พอมองออก ณ จุดนั้น เราไม่สามารถรู้หรอกว่าอนาคตจะออกมาเป็นแบบไหน อะไรต่อมิอะไรเปลี่ยนแปลงได้มากมายในช่วงระหว่างนั้น เราทำได้ก็คือตัดสินใจไป และรับผลที่จะตามมา ถ้าออกมาไม่ดี ก็อย่าโทษตัวเองว่าตัดสินใจผิด ก็แค่เรียนรู้จากมัน
